I wanted to give Ubuntu 18.04 a spin on my FreeBSD box and threw it into bhyve. There is a good tutorial for Ubuntu 16.04. Once I installed with that the vm got stuck in grub.

The bhyve config file for an ubuntu 18.04 machine needs to have the following line for grub:

grub_run_partition="2"

Fwiw, I use vm-bhyve for managing my bhyve machines.
